Hair Transplant FAQ
Hair transplant in a nutshell (FUE & DHI)
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a modern microsurgical procedure that moves your own hair follicles from a dense area (the donor area) to areas where hair is thinning or missing. Only your own follicles are used, so there’s no risk of an immune reaction and the result can look natural.
Hair follicle — explained simply
Think of a hair follicle like a tiny “root unit” that produces hair. It contains the hair bulb (where growth starts), is supported by the blood supply (nutrients + oxygen), and includes sebaceous glands that help keep hair and scalp conditioned.
During a transplant, we move this living unit (the full follicle) from the donor area to a thinning area, so it can grow healthy hair in its new location.
The donor area
The back and sides of the scalp are usually the best donor zones. Hair here is typically genetically more resistant to androgen-related hair loss and tends to keep its density over time. Before the procedure, the donor area is carefully assessed to ensure follicles can be removed safely while maintaining a natural look.
How grafts are extracted
The donor area is disinfected and prepared (often trimmed). After local anesthesia, follicles are extracted with fine micro-instruments to minimize trauma. Grafts are stored in a specialized solution to help maintain viability until implantation.
Techniques used — FUE and DHI
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) — follicles are harvested individually from the donor area. It’s minimally invasive, with no linear scar and gentle graft handling.
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) — grafts are implanted using a dedicated implanter, allowing precise control of angle, direction, and depth, which strongly impacts a natural hairline and overall density.
Can I combine a hair transplant with a vacation in Antalya?
Yes—many patients combine a hair transplant with a short, relaxing trip, which can make the overall experience feel more comfortable. You’ll have time to rest before and after the procedure.
Antalya offers a Mediterranean climate, seaside promenades, historic sights, and great cafés—so your trip can be about more than treatment: it’s also time for recovery and a reset.
Many patients travel with a partner or family member, making it a practical blend of medical care + vacation—with extra peace of mind and support.
Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant?
Type and pattern of hair loss
The most common candidates have androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss). If hair loss is stable, outcomes are more predictable. If hair loss is rapidly progressing, we may discuss options to support long-term planning.
Donor hair quality and quantity
A key factor is donor density, caliber, and overall quality—usually at the back of the scalp. Strong donor hair often means better coverage and density. This area is also typically more resistant to ongoing loss.
Age and long-term planning
Younger patients may continue to lose hair, so we often recommend conservative planning and a strategy that considers future hair loss. For older patients with stable patterns, planning is usually simpler and long-term results are more predictable.
Overall health
Healing capacity matters. Conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or wound-healing issues may require an individualized medical review. Well-managed conditions often do not automatically disqualify you.
Realistic expectations
A transplant can significantly improve appearance and density, but donor supply is limited. The goal is a natural, balanced result.
Does age affect hair transplant results?
Age alone isn’t the deciding factor. What matters most is stability of hair loss, donor quality, and overall health.
Older patients
Hair loss patterns are often more stable, which can make density planning easier. If you’re healthy, a procedure may still be appropriate later in life.
Younger patients
Hair loss can continue, so we usually recommend a careful, future-proof plan.
Is a hair transplant painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during extraction or implantation. After anesthesia wears off, mild tenderness can occur for a few days, but significant pain is uncommon.
What to expect
- Local numbing of both the donor and recipient areas
- You can rest, listen to music, or watch a movie during the procedure
- You’ll receive aftercare guidance to support comfortable healing
If I’m traveling from the USA or UAE, will language be an issue?
No. An English-speaking coordinator can guide you through planning, clinic communication, and aftercare instructions.
If you prefer, an interpreter can also be arranged so you feel fully comfortable and informed throughout your stay.
Will there be scars after the procedure?
Modern FUE and DHI techniques do not create a linear scar. Instead, the donor area heals with tiny micro-dots that are typically very hard to notice once healed—even with shorter haircuts.
What affects visibility?
- Precision of technique and team experience
- Your individual healing response
- Following aftercare instructions closely
Will the back of my head look noticeable after graft extraction?
With FUE and DHI, grafts are extracted one by one without large cuts or stitches. Early on, the donor area may look mildly red and you may see small scabs, which typically fade within days to about two weeks.
Can women get a hair transplant?
Yes—female hair loss can have different causes (hormones, genetics, stress, thyroid issues), so an initial professional evaluation is important to confirm whether transplantation is the best option.
When appropriate, transplantation can improve density and a natural look.
Many women worry about shaving. With DHI, the approach can be more discreet—often only a small portion of the donor area needs trimming, typically hidden by surrounding hair.
As with men, donor quality is key. Grafts are placed precisely where density is needed most, with careful attention to natural direction and overall aesthetics.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey for a hair transplant?
Most patients stay around 4 days (arrival, procedure day, follow-up check, departure). For extra comfort, some choose 6 days to allow more rest by the sea.
Comfort and recovery
Staying near the Turkish Riviera offers a calm environment for recovery. Relaxation before and after the procedure can support both physical healing and peace of mind.

Can I travel with a companion?
Yes—many patients prefer traveling with a companion. It can make the trip feel more comfortable and supportive.
Your companion can relax at the hotel and enjoy amenities while you attend clinic steps. Having someone with you often adds peace of mind.
Will my transplanted hair look natural?
Yes. DHI and FUE allow graft placement with precise angle, direction, and density for a natural-looking result that blends with your existing hair.
Results also depend on donor hair quality, scalp condition, and aftercare. Choosing an experienced team makes a major difference in achieving a natural hairline and strong density.
What is the success rate of a hair transplant?
With proper candidacy and high-quality technique, it’s common for about 90–95% of transplanted grafts to survive.
What impacts success?
- Team experience — gentle extraction, proper handling, precise placement
- Donor quality — density, caliber, and characteristics of donor hair
- Overall health — healing capacity and well-managed conditions
- Aftercare — following washing and protection instructions
Strong outcomes come from the combination of excellent technique, a solid donor area, and responsible aftercare.
What aftercare do I need after a hair transplant?
You’ll receive clear, personalized instructions. Following them closely supports healing, graft retention, and long-term results.
- Protect the area — avoid pressure, rubbing, or impact
- Gentle washing — use the recommended shampoo and technique
- Limit intense activity — temporarily avoid heavy workouts, sauna, and anything that increases sweating
The first weeks matter most for safe graft take and final density.
Turkey vs. local clinics: what are the differences?
Local clinics offer proximity, while Turkey—especially hubs like Antalya—has become a global destination for hair restoration, with specialized teams and modern technology.
For many international patients, Turkey can offer strong value due to lower operating costs and competition—without compromising quality when choosing a reputable clinic.
It’s important to avoid offers that seem too cheap without verified credentials and real results. Always choose a licensed clinic with experienced medical oversight.
